FWB127 a Project.

I got the gun in bits with a broken spring and all the small components in a plastic
bag. All most all the bluing had been polished off for re-bluing.

So far I have ordered a seal/spring kit from Maccari, who was the only person who
had one with a spring tight enough on the rear guide.

I've shot my self in the foot at least a little with that kit as when I striped the gun I
found the rear piston skirt was fitted with plastic studs. It may well have been venom
tuned at one time.

pc

I am planning to have it re-blued but if I had know it was Laser glided I would have
sent it to Venom and just done the stock myself.

20ish May 2004

Progress so far-
I have chemically striped the stock, it had a very nasty high gloss varnish and the
underlying stain was uneven.

bs

I looking into ways of getting the colour out of the stock without too much sanding
I'm afraid of damaging the chequering or messing up the fit of the but pad.

Other than that I'm part way through making a spring compressor.

The spring kit is not here yet so all I can reasonably do is the wood work on the stock,
hopefully Venom will email me again tomorrow and I will find out if those studs are
their work or not.

Mmm…. Dave called it a resurrection I suppose it is.

26 May 2004. Wednesday.
Checked the stock with Snipper22 and its ok to re-stain and go for a finish on it. I
have some fine "wet and dry" that should be ok and I will use Danish oil to finish.

Spring kit has arrived very quickly, good service.

I have got: -
  • main spring
  • piston seal
  • a plastic cup to go into the piston
  • a plastic locater on the spring
  • breach seal "O" ring
  • 2 types of lubricant

The spring is round section wire and shorter than the one that had been fitted
previously.

28 May Friday.
Got a small tin of B+Q,s exterior wood stain but could not get any very fine wire
wool (OOO grade).

Tragedy!!!!!!!!! UUUggg……

There is a split in the Pistol grip and one under the fore stock, the one in the fore stock
is not serious but the pistol grip could be another matter.

Tried out the stain, rubbing it on with a lint free cloth it seems to work well and give a
pleasant effect. Used a brush to get the excess out of the checkering.

29 May Saturday.
Fixed the pistol grip. I have drilled a hole running up from where the cap should be at
the bottom of the grip. I syringed in about 4 ml of epoxy resin adhesive and pushed in
a length of 6 mm steel studding. It bridges the split and is entirely submerged (no air
gaps) in the resin so it's probably stronger than new and with the cap on it will be
invisible.

sp

I've opened up the split in the fore stock, fortunately is underneath and running in line
with the long axis of the stock, and worked some cyanoacrilate (Super Glue) into it
and it is holding.

Tested some wood filler, it seems to be some sort of PVA base, it's a pale colour and
dries smooth and hard. It took the stain just the same as real wool – or at least a bit of
old softwood.

Filled all cracks with the filler.

Rubbed down the stock with wire wool removed as much unevenness of colour as I
could and dusted the stock down. Had to go Slow and Carefully around the
chequering so as not to damage it.

Applied another coat of stain. Don't like "wet + dry" will stay with steel wool.

Spoke to SFS about getting the gun re-blued and got confirmation it was a Lazer
Glide, it has the studs and what looks like a SlimTech silencer.

I'm thinking to stain again and rub down twice more before moving on the oil.

02Jun2004 Wednesday.

Several more coats of stain on now all rubbed down with the "OOOO" steel wool,
looking a lot better the cracks in the pistol grip are not eye catching you need to look
for them, happy with that.
03Jun2004. Thursday.
Interesting IJ told me that FWB started putting metal reinforcing rods into the pistol
grips of the last 127/124 rifles, splitting must have been a common problem.

First coat of Danish oil applied.
04Jun2004. Friday.
Mailed DM80 got a price for the re-blue and reassembly, DM80 may as well put it
back together while he has the gun. DM80 dose not want the Macarri lubes preferring
to use the Venom lubes he is familiar with. As they wont go off I'll keep them for
next time… The spring compressor is very nearly done but I'll leave it.

I think I will need at least two more coats of oil, probably more. I'll have to wet rub it
with oil at the end so I don't get a high gloss finish.

07Jun2004 Monday.
Two more coats of oil applied and rubbed down. Snipper22 says I should not finish
the stock using wire wool as it can get in the pores of the wood. He uses some sort of
kitchen scourers but he did not tell me what type. Will get some 800+ grit "wet and
dry" abrasive sheet at lunch time and use that.

It's looking good but not perfect, I have not got the stain completely even, I'm not
sure it's possible to get a fully even effect on wood that's been striped. There are a
few dents I could not get out but I think they are better than filler. One is on the but,
it's too deep to steam out, located were sanding the wood away would be noticeable
and too shallow I think to take filler well.

Still it is beginning to take on that subtle sheen that you get on a decent stock.

Have arranged to pass the action to DM80 on Wednesday he will re-blue it and re-
assemble it using the Maccari spring kit, apparently he will need it for 7-10 days.

Got the parts together and checked that all the little bits are there, the small
components are all in plastic bottles – got the lot!

I suppose I should start thinking about a Scope, I don't think I will be keeping the gun
as I have the Sidewinder but I would like to use it for a while and test it.

08Jun2004 Tuesday.
Was not able to get any fine "wet + dry" tried to use some 400 grit but I feel it's too
harsh. Have found a knackered pan sourer so I'll try that, as I won't be able get to a
good motor factor until Friday.

09Jun2004 Wednesday.

Did nothing (went shooting) did not try pan scourer.
Took the bits to the club last night but neither DM80 or IJ was there fortunately Ray
took the gun and will drop it off with DM80 tomorrow.

Snipper22 told me what type of scouring pad I need so I'll try to pick one up.
10Jun2004 Thursday.
I must have got the wrong pad it was just a bit too rough it did a good job though and
nothing some more oil and polishing wont fix. From what I gathered talking to
Snipper22 some of the oils are a lot thinker than Danish oil and build that much faster.
If I get fed up I'll get some Tong(?) oil.
11Jun2004. Weekend.
Managed to get the correct grade of pad on Friday, it's dark grey, used wet it's done
very well. I've got 2 more oil/dry/rubdowns done, I think I will try just burnishing the
stock and giving it one more oiling. I suspect that it's going to be more than one more
coat of oil. May have it ready for the action by next weekend, it's slower now the oil
seems to be taking longer to dry. Over 24 hr unless I can keep it very warm, I stood
the stock in the sun yesterday to help it dry. Oiled again late Sunday

15Jun2004 Wednesday.

Oil fully dry last night so I burnished the stock with an old tea towel. Nice
smooth sheen and no "dull" parts, applied another coat of oil hopefully dry on

Outstanding.
    • Get the action back – probably next week.
    • Plug the hole in the base of the pistol grip. I'll probably use bit of dowel cut
    • flush to the base of the grip.
    • Clean old varnish off edges of white line spacers.
    • Re-fit cap to end of pistol grip.
Got a swap advert running on the BBS "PC for Scope" but so far no response. A
disadvantage of the BBS is that you need a working computer to see the adverts – not
a + when advertising a PC. The add will also be published in Loot on Friday, I put it
in the Shooting section as sale or swap; will put it in computer section as well.

16Jun2004 Thursday.

Went shooting last night, put advert for PC/Scope swap on notice board. Ray's
spoken to Dave and the 127's barrel is a little bent (in two places) now very glad it's
having a professional rebuild. That would account for the damage to the pistol grip;
somebody may have let the barrel snap shut, hope they weren't hurt.
The add's been on the BBS for about 24hr not had a single response, probably do
better in Loot. It's in the Online edition on Friday and in hardcopy on Tuesday.
1Jun2004 Monday.

The PC I was going to swap collapsed over the weekend so I've pulled the
adverts and I'm giving the few salvageable bits away.
Tried float filling i.e. going across the grain using "wet + dry" and oil. What a disaster
it's supposed to fill the grain with wood particles but it just made a huge mess. It
works for Tony but I don't think he uses Danish oil; maybe Danish oil is the problem.
Cleared it off and I'm nearly at a start again stage, I have had to apply stain again but
at least it will be more even.

Had an email from Dave the bluing won't be done until the very end of the week so I
wont get it back until next week. No problem it will take all week to sort the stock!

23Jun2004 Wednesday.

I've got the action back sooner than expected, now with a VTech silencer on
it. The bluing is very good, deep and even. There were a few scratches Dave could
not get out, they are not obvious you have to look for them, but it's an old gun so that
is to be expected. The silencer has a small paint chip off the top edge, I'll sort that.
Dave took some pictures of the bluing and has said I can use them.

bl

I did manage to fire the action over club range, Dave had set the trigger up nicely and
there was surprisingly little recoil. It's doing about 11.6fpe which is fine with me but
it might creep up a very little as the piston head beds in.

Still working on the Stock.
3Jun2004 to 28Jun2004 Monday

This time I used 800grit "wet + dry" to smooth and polish the stock and it worked
very well, it feels as smooth as a Logan stock excepting the knocks I have not been
able to get out.

The stock is just hanging to harden; it feels good I might even fit the action tonight. I
still think that the Danish oil may be a bit too old it's not hardening as fast as it
should. I bought it when I lived in Skelm and re-finished a table probably 5-10years
ago.

Still it will be fully hardened tonight so I will polish it with some ordinary wax and it
should be done.

I'll have to pull the scope off the S200 to try it but it will be worth it!

All back together!!!!!!!!
